This paper proposes a Christian-Orthodox perspective on the current financial and economic crisis. Following a relatively brief presentation of the general framework of the Orthodox anthropology (in relation to God, Creation, and man), it is suggested that among the main causal factors of the crisis is what in the Orthdox theology terminology is named “the disfigurement of the God’s Image in man”, that is: top level corruption and frauds, laxity of the governmental and controlling authorities, organized disruptions of the financial markets, cupidity of the finance professionals, avidity of the most employers, or complicity of the financial analysts. The paper argues that in order to find out a lasting solution to the current crisis an Orthodox-theological approach is needed; an approach which calls for a profound change in people’s minds and attitudes, a genuine penence, so that the harmonization between professional capabilities and morality could be restored.
