After Ronald Coase, the theory of the firm has maintained in various forms the market/firm distinction. The majority of subsequent transaction cost based theories of the firm provide little more than a particular interpretation of transaction costs (as agency costs, opportunism, team costs, surveillance costs etc.). The concept becomes so broad as to amount to a rediscovery and reconceptualization of the traditional general concept of „cost”. In the present author’s opinion, Oliver E. Williamson’s main contributions fit into this description.
