One specific way in which firms can make use of financial markets is to list the firm on a public exchange, allowing many types of investors the opportunity to purchase a share of the ownership of the firm, and permitting the firm to source capital at the lowest available cost for investment in productive projects. Firms undertake this change in ownership from a private, entrepreneur-driven entity to a public firm via an Initial Public Offering (IPO).
This analysis presents the features of the market for publicly traded football clubs regarding the liquidity and volatility of the stocks, the market capitalization and the structure and trend of the Dow Jones Stoxx Football index.
The case study analyses the Olympique Lyonnais Groupe club's listing on a public exchange and explains the motifs for accessing the financial markets, the presentation of the investment plan for diversifying the group's activities, the dynamics and forecast of the income sources, ending with the impact of the IPO on the club's financial and sports results.
