The present financial crisis will considerably influence the architecture of contemporary banking systems. In this context, we will witness a series of changes from the point of view of the number of institutions, their typology, sources and the ways to attract resources, the property’s form and structure as well as from the point of view of the corporate governance. The present paper aims at debating the main implications of the present financial crisis on the architecture of the banking systems, attempting to highlight the trends that will occur within the banking activity. In addition, we try to make introspection into the central bank history, underling the circumstances in which it gets its present prerogatives in the economy and witch will be the main transformations in its nature. Also, we make some consideration regarding the role of the central banks in the financial crises. We suggest some changes in the financial regulation and the lender of last resort function. We will also formulate a viewpoint as regards the validity of the principles of the Austrian school in the modern context.
