Loss of biodiversity is one of the most important issues on the environmental agenda of the contemporary world. Nature conservation, as a scientific and operational concern progressed significantly in approaching this issue, advancing a number of solutions that are today in different stages of implementation and assessment. The managerial principles in this field stress the need of economic substantiation. In order to respond to this request the ecosystem economics was developed, a number of concepts and theories being proposed to support solutions such as payments of ecosystem services or biodiversity credits. Our paper aims to formulate a general picture of the economic “front” in the prevention and mitigation in the fights against biodiversity loss. In this respect, we will start by analyzing the notion of value confronted with nature, continuing with an organization of the existing theories and an assessment of the implemented solutions.
