The paper proposes to identify the most important development priorities for Romania until the year 2020, based on the analysis of the dynamic structure of world economy, the EU’s and Romanian economy. Starting from the definition of structural distributions and of its main characteristic measurement, the paper analyses the following: structural trends in the global economy on the main economic sectors during the period 1970-2008; global economic structure and of the EU-15 in the years 1989 and 2008; comparative analysis of the structure of Gross Value Added of the Romanian economy and the European Union in the years 1989 and 2008; evolution of the Gross Value Added of the main sectors of Romanian economy in the period 1989-2008; evolution of the manufacturing industry Gross Value Added in the period 1989-2008; evolution of manufacturing industry Gross Value Added structure, grouped by seven main areas and their export trend during 1989 to 2008. A special sub-chapter is addressed to entrepreneurial development and identifying the areas that correspond to investment opportunities for SMEs. Finally, based on the internal and external analysis above, the paper identifies ten strategic priority options for developing certain areas in Romania towards 2020.
