In just about one decade – of which the most recent five years were plagued by the global economic crisis – the EU - China bilateral trade developed swiftly and vigorously, by almost 400%, to become one of the most important commercial flows in global trade, with daily exchanges exceeding 1 billion euro. The paper looks at this development, both in quantitative and structural terms, highlighting the impact inflicted to it by the economic crisis, marking out some of the peculiarities of the EU - China commercial relationship, the mutual advantages and benefits shared by the two partners and, on the other hand, the inherent asperities and tensions incurred in recent years. The conclusions of this assay maintain that undoubtedly the benefits prevail for both parties, and that as long as it is fair, competition – fierce and unnerving as it might be – is the main sound driver of innovation and progress for companies and for countries alike, and, therefore, only its unfair, disrupting forms should be fought against.
