The study defines the three types of convergence – institutional, nominal and real ones –, the connection among them and their main measurement indicators. Also, it presents and analyses the essence and role of the institutions in the modern economies, the main issues concerning the institutional convergence in relation to the integration into the EU, the institutional capital and the impact of the improvement of the quality and effectiveness of the institutions on the economic gap among the countries during the implementation of the EU’s integration strategy.
