The sustainable consumption becomes a systematic challenge for the sustainable development and its role will increase in the future. This paper discusses the increasing contribution of sustainable consumption by stressing the central role of sustainable consumers and advances some ways of playing it. The goal of sustainable development will be reached only if the consumers accept the ecological, green, and sustainable and socially accepted solutions of producers. Recent researches found that the consumers have a propensity to buy and use sustainable goods and services but are less active in purchasing them. The consumers must be supported by businesses, governments and civil society for making sustainable purchasing decisions. First, a new sustainable development model which makes clearer the future needed approach could help the consumer in having a more sustainable behaviour. Secondly, this new integrated approach will become effective if appropriated plans of action based on the particular drivers of sustainable consumption are implemented.
