Within environmental sociology field there is a continuing debate focused on the causes, consequences and future steps for the society in terms of various environmental issues, especially global climate change. Major environmental challenges like global warming, ozone rarefaction, fading biodiversity, rampant deforestation and large urban areas living conditions deterioration require international concerted efforts, national public policies and strategies, developed and implemented in a proactive and intelligent manner and sharpening the civic responsibility. These problems’ acuity is stressed also by their cross-border feature, which requires consensus solutions, accepted by all society components, and measurable as effect. EU 2020’s directives aimed at combating climate change and promoting the use of renewable energy sources were the initial target reduction of 20% compared to 1990 emissions of greenhouse gases, increasing by 20% from renewable energy sources (RES) in total EU energy consumption. In this context, in order to meet environmental targets set in the EU 2020 Strategy, the Romanian government set up more ambitious environmental policies regarding energy production from renewable sources. The aim of this paper is to perform an extended analysis on the global trend in terms of environmental policies and performances of Romania about development of renewable sources.
