Social contributive insurance systems which are based on the repartition principle between generations are strongly influenced by the demographic evolutions.
Nowadays more and more European countries have begun to reform the pension systems having in view the pessimist forecasts made by experts. They estimate that pension expenditures might reach threatening shares in European member states’ GNP (Gross National Product). This is caused by two factors: the emphasized trend of population ageing and life expectancy growth.
The paper analyses the evolution of population ageing phenomenon in Romania, the correlation between indicators which characterise the population ageing phenomenon and the demographic decreasement with a few basic elements of social insurance in Romania.
