The paper analyses the swift growth of bank loans granted to the nongovernmental sector with a special attention on the case of Romania, concluding that it creates several perils for the macroeconomic and financial stability. The causes and implications are presented as well as the solutions the authorities may use in order to diminish the negative consequences of the swift growth of loans. The author argues that in order to be really effective, the measures taken by the authorities should combine the macroeconomic policies with the prudential ones.
