The author analyses the distribution of poverty on residence areas, regions, sex, age, occupation. There are also presented the political atitude facing poverty, the impact of the social protection system and a comparison between poverty in Romania and poverty in EU. Poverty in Romania is not profound (the majority of the poor people live not far from the poverty treshold); the consumption inequality remains constantly low even in the periods of decline in poverty when consumption inequality increases, in general. The level of relative poverty is considerably lower than the level in USA or Japan and similar or in most cases lower than the level in EU and candidate countries.
