The paper analyses the group of the exporting branches (whose share in total exports is over 1%, and together contribute more than 80% to the total exports) from the point of view of global competitiveness. The Porter methodology is utilized, which uses general conditions, demand conditions, supporting industries, governmental policies analysed as favourable factors and barriers for branches competitivity development. Changes that occurred in the competitiveness of the Romanian economy, due to the transition process, between 1989 and 2002 are analysed. The main correlations between different indicators (both favourable and obstacles for branch competitiveness) are studied.
