The paper starts with a brief discussion on the role of methodology in connection with different theoretical approaches from a historical perspective. It is then shown that a multitude of paradigms is appropriate when dealing with complex developments such as integration. Divergent views exist in this respect. In the end, the case for an open methodology – which can readily absorb these differences, and maintains an interdisciplinary outlook -, is stressed.
