Logistics activities play an increasingly important role in the mechanism of running a foreign trade operation. The costs for this activity are found in the final price which determines the achievement of the business transaction. On an increasingly competitive global market the logistical factors acquire a growing importance, emphasis being placed on optimizing the logistics activities. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the logistics performance index calculated by the World Bank specialists and to present the recent changes in the Community customs practice. The simplification of the customs procedures, redefining customs regimes, using e-customs are prerequisites for improving the process of customs control, a key component of the logistics performance index.
