The paper provides a panoramic view of Romanian consumers’ behaviour as revealed by some credit market patterns. The proposed analysis gives a broad account of the relationiships between macroeconomic data and microeconomic consumer behaviour in a critical bank loans market, displaying a prominent role in the internal economic crisis (partially induced from abroad by transnational credit vehicles), as well in the proposed routes for re-launching the domestic economic growth. This research addresses some determinants of the consumption credits denominated in foreign currency, following a territorial survey and highlighting peculiarities of the leu / euro bi-monetary credit system: i.e. possible substitution effects between domestic and foreign currency and the basic rule that loans have to be contracted in borrower’s income currency. The data on which this study relies on are based on recent reports issued by the National Bank of Romania regarding the territorial structure of credit instruments in our country.
