The present paper sets out a presentation and an analysis of the patent system in the European Union in the context of the new economic policies accompanying the implementation of the Lisbon Strategy. There are also analysed the alternatives to the existing patent system and the definitive elements for the creation of an optimal framework for innovation in Europe, like the present costs of patenting.
