John Taylor Gatto (b. 1935) is known primarily as a severe critic of the modern systems of public education – provided compulsorily by the state –, especially in his main works: “Dumbing Us Down” (1992), “The Underground History of American Education” (2000) or “Weapons of Mass Instruction” (2009). Less discussed are his constructive proposals about education “as it should be”. The publishing of the Romanian edition of his book “Cum suntem imbecilizaţi. Curriculumul ascuns al învăţământului obligatoriu (Editura Anacronic, 2016) is a good opportunity to revisit both Gatto’s criticism and constructive suggestions.
