Throughout the EU, retailing is increasingly becoming dominated by a small number of supermarket chains. While there is anti-monopoly legislation to stop major producers abusing market dominance, there is no EU legislation specifically designed to tackle abuses of supermarket buyer power. The Written Declaration 88/2007 adopted by the European Parliament in February 2008 calls for investigations and solutions from DG Competition. I discuss in this paper the implications on the European retail market, their echoes on the Romanian market and finally the plausible and predictable state interpenetrations.
