Human development and social cohesion are not only important component, but essential premises and powerful drivers of sustainable development also. Romania’s capability and chance to sustainable development and successful integration in integration in European Union are strongly depending upon them. The paper reviews the main areas of human development and social cohesion in Romania: health, education, income inequality and polarization, poverty. The analysis comprises an assessment of health, education and income gaps between Romania and the Member States of European Union, and of progress and setbacks in human development and in conditions of social cohesion in Romania during transition from planned to market economy.
